Chapter 13 - THE PEOPLE WHO ALMOST PAID FOR THEIR BOSSES’ GREED
Stopping the sale was easy compared with repairing what management had damaged.
NorthStar Ground Transport employed thousands of drivers, dispatchers, mechanics, analysts, and warehouse workers. Most knew nothing about Meridian, fake vendors, hidden trusts, or executive betrayal.
They only knew rumors were everywhere and retirement accounts were moving with the stock price.
So we told them what we could.
No corporate theater.
No claims everything was fine.
It wasn’t.
We announced the transaction was canceled after internal compliance concerns. We confirmed the company remained solvent. We established an employee hotline managed by outside counsel. We froze executive bonuses while restitution and recovery were calculated.
Then Margaret asked for something.
“What happens to people if their bosses steal twenty-eight million dollars?”
“The company absorbs the loss.”
“No. I mean people.”
I knew what she meant.
Overtime cuts.
Delayed raises.
Canceled hiring.
Quiet consequences pushed downward.
She hated that.
So the Reed Horizon Trust funded an independent employee emergency reserve while civil recovery actions proceeded. Not charity. A buffer. Short-term aid for workers affected by restructuring caused by executive misconduct.
Mom refused to let us name it after her.
Naturally.
“What if we call it the Seam Fund?” I asked.
She narrowed her eyes.
“Daniel.”
“Just asking.”
Eventually it became the NorthStar Worker Stability Fund.
Boring enough for her approval.
Julian’s cooperation helped recover assets.
Meridian’s side agreements collapsed.
Several shell entities were frozen.
Civil suits followed.
Marcus’s board allies resigned one by one as investigators determined who knew what and when.
Some genuinely knew nothing.
Others had decided not to ask questions because NorthStar’s results looked good.
That lesson mattered almost as much as the fraud itself.
