Chapter 6 - Sarah Had My Voice but Not My Language

Detective Mills recovered deleted drafts from my phone.

Sarah had been writing messages as me.

Most were discarded before sending.

That gave investigators something unusual:

A record of her trying to imitate my voice.

I JUST NEED TO DISAPPEAR FOR A WHILE.

Deleted.

I never used disappear casually.

PLEASE RESPECT MY MENTAL HEALTH JOURNEY.

Deleted.

I would rather have eaten drywall than write “mental health journey.”

Then:

DON’T TELL LAUREN WHERE I AM. SHE’LL MAKE THIS WORSE.

Deleted.

That one was designed specifically to isolate me from my sister.

Sarah finally settled on two short messages because detail increased the risk of sounding wrong.

But she had made another mistake.

She used my phone at times when her own phone connected to our home Wi-Fi simultaneously.

Not proof alone.

Part of a pattern.

Then investigators examined Carter Ridge Renovations.

The login showing I moved the missing $286,000 had been created five days before I ever looked at the accounting system.

Associated recovery email:

An address controlled by Sarah.

The transfers required a second approval.

That approval came from Sarah’s administrator credentials.

I sat beside Lauren while Detective Mills explained it.

“So Sarah set me up?”

“That’s where the evidence is pointing.”

“Why?”

“We’re still tracing the money.”

My sister looked furious.

I felt something stranger.

Relief.

Then shame for feeling relieved.

Because if Sarah took the money, Michael had imprisoned me based on a lie.

But that did not answer the worse question.

When did he learn?

The carvings suggested around day eighteen.

Digital evidence narrowed it further.

On day seventeen of my confinement, Carter Ridge’s outside accountant emailed Michael directly.

Subject:

UNAUTHORIZED ADMIN ACTIVITY

The accountant had noticed the ECARTER profile was created by Sarah.

Michael opened the email.

Then called him for nine minutes.

That evening, my carvings recorded the first argument.

YOU TOLD ME IT WAS HER.

The next morning, Michael visited me.

He did not ask where the money was.

He placed the house-sale authorization through the hatch instead.

“Sign.”

“What about the company money?”

“Sign this.”

“You don’t think I took it anymore.”

His face changed.

I saw it.

Even then.

“Michael?”

He slammed the hatch.

That moment haunted me after rescue.

Because day one through seventeen could at least be explained by a monstrous false belief.

Not excused.

Explained.

What happened after day seventeen required another reason.

And by then, Sarah’s lie was no longer enough.
