Chapter 11 - Sarah Chose Herself Last
Sarah asked for a plea agreement first.
Not Michael.
That surprised nobody who knew her.
Her attorney offered financial records, passwords, and testimony about what happened after day seventeen.
In exchange, prosecutors agreed to consider her cooperation when resolving charges.
She did not walk free.
She did not become a victim because Michael was more violent.
She had held my phone.
Helped stage messages.
Limited food and water.
Carried papers to the hatch.
Watched.
Encouraged.
And stolen the money that started the entire chain.
During her proffer, Sarah said:
“I never thought Michael would keep her there that long.”
The prosecutor asked:
“When did you tell him to release her?”
Silence.
“Mrs. Carter?”
“I told him things were getting dangerous.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Sarah looked down.
Eventually she admitted something that explained her better than any diagnosis could.
She had spent decades cleaning up after men she loved.
Robert’s failed business.
Michael’s unstable cash flow.
Family debt.
Embarrassment.
She viewed herself as the person who prevented disaster.
Over time, preventing disaster became more important than whether her methods created one.
When Michael trapped me, Sarah’s first instinct was not:
This is wrong.
It was:
How do we make this survivable for the family?
That thinking kept me behind plywood.
Michael responded to Sarah’s cooperation exactly as expected.
“She ruined everything.”
Not:
I ruined Emily’s life.
Not:
I imprisoned my pregnant wife.
His mother had ruined everything by telling prosecutors the truth.
During a court break, Michael saw Sarah across the hallway for the first time in weeks.
She started crying.
He turned away.
I expected satisfaction.
I felt none.
Their loyalty had destroyed them because neither understood the difference between supporting family and helping family avoid consequences.
