Chapter 13 - Seventy-Three Days Became Evidence

The criminal cases took more than a year.

My daughter was born before either resolved.

Michael faced charges related to kidnapping, unlawful restraint, domestic violence, evidence tampering, coercion, and conduct surrounding the false communications.

Sarah faced her own confinement-related and financial charges, plus offenses connected to the stolen business funds and fabricated accounting records.

Their cases were not identical.

Neither were the sentences.

The house remained an evidence site for months.

The plywood.

Vent.

Hatch.

Fasteners.

Interior carvings.

Investigators removed sections carefully.

Defense experts examined them.

Photographs documented every mark.

My nail marks were compared against radio schedules, bank records, text messages, delivery dates, and even weather reports.

They aligned.

Day thirty-six:

I carved STORM — POWER BLINKED 3X.

Utility records documented the outage.

Day forty-nine:

CLIENT YELLING KITCHEN

A customer’s phone records placed him at the house.

Day sixty-two:

TAX FINAL

County records matched.

My wall became a timeline independent of memory.

That mattered because trauma had made some days indistinguishable.

At trial, Michael’s lawyer suggested my recollection could be unreliable.

The prosecutor answered:

“Then we can use the wall.”

Michael eventually accepted responsibility for major charges rather than risk the maximum exposure of a full verdict on every count.

Sarah’s cooperation reduced but did not erase her sentence.

Carter Ridge Renovations closed.

Several customers recovered portions of their losses through insurance, civil settlements, and asset liquidation.

Some lost money permanently.

I refused to pretend my case was the only damage the family caused.

The house sold eventually, but not through Michael’s rushed contract.

Court-supervised financial proceedings handled outstanding liens, taxes, and ownership interests.

My share of the net proceeds was protected.

No windfall.

No secret fortune.

Just the legal value I already possessed.

Noah testified.

Afterward, someone again called him a hero.

He shook his head.

May you like

“I heard knocking and believed it.”

I thought that was heroic enough.
