Chapter 5 - The Folder Logan Was Never Supposed to Open

I made Logan repeat himself three times.

He sounded sick by the end of it.

“Mom asked me to bring some property papers from Dad’s desk to the condo before they left,” he said. “I grabbed the county folder by mistake. Megan… your name is on the deed.”

I sat down so fast the chair scraped the kitchen tile.

“What deed?”

“Your house.”

My house.

The one I had lived in for three years.

The one my parents told me they were “letting” Ava and me rent after my divorce because I needed stability and couldn’t afford a mortgage alone.

Logan came over that night with the folder.

Inside was a copy of the recorded deed from three years earlier.

Grantor: the seller.

Grantee: Megan Hart, unmarried woman.

My full name.

My address.

My signature on the closing acknowledgment.

I stared at the paper until my eyes blurred.

“I don’t remember this.”

Logan looked miserable.

“I think you signed a whole stack at closing and Mom told you it was rental paperwork and insurance forms.”

I remembered the day suddenly in broken pieces.

A title office.

Too much coffee.

My mother telling me not to get overwhelmed because “paperwork people drag everything out.”

Me initialing and signing while Ava colored beside me.

“Why would they do this?” I whispered.

Logan rubbed a hand over his face.

“I don’t know all of it. But I know one thing.”

He tapped the deed.

“That house was never theirs.”

The next morning I called an attorney.
