Chapter 14 - Logan Stopped Being the Protected Child

My brother changed more quietly than the legal case did.
He moved out of the apartment my parents had been partially funding.
Got a part-time job on top of grad school.
Started paying his own rent instead of accepting whatever account his parents used.
One evening, he came over carrying takeout and stood in my kitchen awkwardly until Ava hugged him.
He almost cried.
“I should’ve seen this sooner,” he said after she went to bed.
“Probably.”
He nodded.
“I kept telling myself Mom was dramatic, not dangerous.”
“A lot of people do.”
“Do you hate me?”
I thought about it honestly.
“No. But I don’t trust you automatically anymore.”
He accepted that better than I expected.
It was the first adult conversation we had ever had.
Later, he told me something that mattered more than the deeds and the bank transfers.
“When Mom called you unstable in the family group, that was the first time I realized she was willing to rewrite reality in public, not just inside the family.”
