Chapter 1 - The Bed Where My Daughter Was Missing

The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes in the hospital was my mother holding my hand.

For one stupid second, I thought that meant she had stayed because she loved me.

Then I remembered Ava.

“Where’s my daughter?”

My mother’s smile came too fast.

“She’s fine. She was discharged. She’s home resting.”

My ribs felt like broken glass every time I breathed. My wrist was bandaged, my head throbbed, and my thoughts were moving through painkillers and fog—but those words cut through everything.

Ava was nine years old.

She had been in the same crash.

“Let me talk to her.”

“She’s sleeping.”

“Wake her up.”

“Megan, don’t start this.”

Then my mother reached into her purse and pulled out my phone.

“We may need access to your account in case there are expenses for Ava.”

That was the moment something turned cold inside me.

Not one question about how I felt.

Not one tear about her granddaughter.

Just my money.

I was exhausted, scared, and stupid enough to think my child needed me to cooperate, so I unlocked the phone and gave her the banking code.

Her whole body relaxed.

“I have to run some errands,” she said, already standing.

“Are you coming back?”

“Of course.”

She did not come back that day.

Or that night.

The next morning, when I called, she still would not let me talk to Ava.

“She’s asleep.”

“It’s almost noon.”

“Megan, you’re not thinking clearly.”

May you like

I had heard that tone my entire life.

It was the voice my mother used whenever reality became inconvenient for her.
