Chapter 6 - Margaret Starts to Crack
Margaret spent five nights in county lockup before her attorney got her into a hearing.
The judge did not like elderly-woman optics, but she liked pillow suffocation even less.
Margaret was released under strict conditions: no contact with me, no hospital visits, no indirect communication, GPS monitoring, surrender of her passport.
The moment she was out, she began trying to communicate anyway.
Not directly.
Through church friends.
Through an aunt of Ethan’s I had met twice.
Through a voicemail left for Julia.
“Tell Claire she’s making a tragic misunderstanding worse.”
Mason documented every attempt.
Meanwhile, Ethan went on the offensive.
He sent flowers to my hospital room. Security threw them away.
He filed an emergency request through his lawyer asking for monitored visitation because I was “his injured spouse.”
Denied.
He then tried a softer approach—a handwritten letter full of phrases like our marriage, miscommunication, your pain is being weaponized.
At the bottom, he added one line that made my skin go cold.
You don’t know who you’re really dealing with.
Mason thought it was intimidation.
Julia thought it was ego.
I thought it sounded like a warning from a man under pressure.
Then, on the seventh day after the suffocation attempt, Mason called with something better than theory.
Margaret had cracked during questioning.
Not fully. Not honestly. But enough.
She called Ethan “weak.” She said she was “always cleaning up his disasters.” And when detectives asked about Emily, she snapped:
“That girl should’ve stayed gone.”
Three words.
Not dead.
Gone.
Mason repeated them twice to make sure I understood.
That was clue number two.
Emily’s case had never made sense because everyone kept assuming the ending.
What if the ending had never happened?
What if Emily had not died?
