Chapter 3 - Ethan’s First Lie

Ethan tried to see me that afternoon.

Hospital security refused.

From my bed, I could hear his raised voice down the hallway.

“My wife needs me.”

No, I thought. My wife needed oxygen. My wife needed a spine that wasn’t cracked in two places. My wife needed the truth, which was the one thing Ethan had never intended to give me.

Julia arrived before sunset, pale and furious, carrying her tablet and a charger and the screenshots I had sent her.

She sat beside my bed and squeezed my fingers carefully around the cast.

“He already called me,” she said.

“What did he say?”

“That you were confused, overmedicated, and being manipulated by police.” Her mouth hardened. “Which was a stupid thing to say when I was literally looking at screenshots from his phone.”

We gave everything to Mason.

The messages weren’t flirtatious in the way I remembered. Looking at them now, with fear stripped away, I could see something else.

Why haven’t you done it yet?

Your mother promised this would be settled.

I’m tired of waiting.

And one message that made my stomach twist:

Don’t pretend the balcony was enough.

Mason photographed every page.

Then he asked about finances.

That question opened a door I should have opened months earlier.

I owned the condo where Ethan and I lived. I had inherited it from my aunt before we married. It was legally separate property. Ethan had spent a year trying to convince me to refinance, draw equity, “make the money work harder.”

I always refused.

Two weeks before my fall, he had also asked me to add him to a brokerage account my father left me.

I refused that too.

When Mason heard that, he didn’t say I told you so.

He simply wrote it down.

That evening he returned with news.

Ethan had given a formal statement.

He admitted there had been an argument the night I fell, but claimed I stormed onto the balcony after accusing him of cheating. He said he went inside to cool off, then heard me scream from below.

A clean story.

Too clean.

“And Margaret?” I asked.

“She lawyered up.”

Julia looked at him. “Can you hold them?”

Mason’s voice was measured.

“For the hospital assault, yes. For the balcony, we need more.”

May you like

Then he glanced at the screenshots again.

“But we’re already closer than they think.”
