Chapter 14 - Ellie Learned Coffee Could Stay in the Cup

A year and a half later, Ellie was almost four.
Her scars had faded.
Her memory had not disappeared entirely.
For a long time she watched mugs.
Then one Sunday morning she stood beside me while I made coffee.
“Hot?”
“Yes.”
“Stay there?”
“Yes.”
I placed the mug at the back of the counter.
“It stays with Mommy.”
She considered that.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
That was healing.
Not a grand speech.
A child believing a mug could remain where an adult said it would.
I repainted the kitchen.
Not because the walls had done anything wrong.
Because I wanted a color Linda had never seen.
Dad helped.
He was terrible with rollers.
Ellie put three handprints on one wall.
I kept them.
Catherine and I spoke occasionally.

Ruth eventually settled part of her decades-old property dispute through counsel.
I stayed completely outside it.
That felt important.
