Chapter 12 - Ben Had Known About Ruth Before He Knew Me

Ruth produced a letter Ben sent her seven years earlier.

Before Nora.

Before Ellie.

Before our marriage.

He wanted information about the old restaurant property dispute.

One sentence mattered.

IF MOM EVER NEEDS OUTSIDE PROPERTY TO SAVE THE COMPANY, I NEED TO KNOW HOW MUCH WE’RE ACTUALLY FACING.

Ben had known.

He could no longer claim he stumbled blindly into his parents’ desperation.

Then we found handwriting on the returned envelope.

Linda’s.

CARTER’S DAUGHTER WILL INHERIT ENOUGH. DON’T PANIC.

Dad went pale.

My hands started shaking.

“How long did she know who I was?”

Ruth answered:

“Before Ben introduced himself.”

The first date rewrote itself.

Ben asking:

“Do you work in real estate like your dad?”

“What happened to your grandmother’s apartments?”

“Would you ever sell them?”

I had thought he was curious about my life.

He had already read part of it.

When confronted in deposition, Ben did something unexpected.

He admitted it.

“My mother told me Nora would be at the gala.”

“Why?”

“She thought I should meet her.”

“Because she owned property?”

A long silence.

“At first.”

The room became still.

Then he looked toward me.

“But I loved her.”

I believed him.

That did not rescue him.

Love without respect for another person’s autonomy is not a defense.

It is simply possession with feelings attached.
