Chapter 8 - THE MESSAGES ON THE OLD IPAD

The breakthrough was not forensic wizardry.

It was an old iPad in my desk.

Years earlier, Graham used it for work.

His messages still synchronized sporadically through an account he never fully logged out of.

I did not search it secretly.

Maya arranged for it to be preserved and reviewed appropriately once I explained what it contained.

There were message threads between Graham and Judith.

Most were ordinary.

Groceries.

Appointments.

Money.

Then:

Eight months earlier.

JUDITH:

She’s making a huge thing out of nothing again.

GRAHAM:

What happened?

JUDITH:

Pantry door caught her side.

GRAHAM:

Is she going to urgent care?

JUDITH:

Probably.

GRAHAM:

I’ll handle it.

I’ll handle it.

Then:

GRAHAM:

Just say you didn't see her there.

Judith:

That IS what happened.

GRAHAM:

Good.

Another thread after the garage incident:

JUDITH:

She fell again.

GRAHAM:

Mom.

JUDITH:

I barely touched the basket.

GRAHAM:

Does she need a doctor?

JUDITH:

I don’t know.

GRAHAM:

I’ll tell them she tripped.

My hands shook.

He had known.

Not every detail.

Enough.

The last thread was from the night of my staircase fall.

Judith sent Graham from the ER parking lot:

I DIDN’T MEAN IT.

He replied:

I KNOW.

Then:

LET ME TALK TO HER BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING.

The man who asked me to call it an accident had already begun managing the story before we reached the hospital.

That made his behavior systematic.

But one message confused me.

Dated eighteen months earlier.

Before Judith moved into our house.

JUDITH:

Did she tell the doctor?

GRAHAM:

No.

JUDITH:

Good.

My chest tightened.

That was the bathroom injury.

Judith had not been there.

Why was Graham updating her?

And what exactly had he been afraid I might tell the doctor?
