Chapter 6 - THE $42,000 WAS ONLY PART OF IT

Maya told me to separate the abuse issue from the financial one.

We did.

The financial problem still mattered.

I reviewed eighteen months of statements.

$42,000 had gone directly to Judith.

But there was another $19,700 in expenses Graham categorized as household costs.

They weren’t.

Judith’s insurance.

Storage unit.

Attorney consultation.

Her old property assessments.

A cash withdrawal matching a payment on her private loan.

No secret fortune.

No elaborate criminal enterprise.

Something more ordinary.

My husband had been subsidizing his mother while repeatedly telling me our own finances were tight.

We had postponed replacing my car.

Canceled a vacation.

Reduced retirement contributions.

I had worked weekend consulting projects because Graham said:

“We need to rebuild savings.”

He knew where the savings were going.

I did not.

Then Maya asked whether Graham could legally access everything he moved.

Mostly yes.

Joint accounts.

Shared funds.

Financial betrayal did not automatically equal theft.

That almost made it worse.

He did not need to forge anything.

He relied on marriage giving him access and my trust preventing me from checking closely.

Then we found the one account he could not explain.

A $12,000 line of credit opened six months earlier in both our names.

Electronic application.

I had no memory of approving it.

The proceeds went toward Judith’s tax debt and credit cards.

Graham insisted I had clicked approval one night while we sat on the couch.

Maybe.

I genuinely could not remember.

That frightened me.

Then Maya found the application disclosures had been delivered to an email address Graham controlled.

My name was on the account.

His email received the paperwork.

Not proof of forgery.

Enough reason to dispute and investigate.

When I confronted him through counsel, his first response was not:

You approved it.

It was:

WE CAN PAY THAT OFF AS SOON AS YOU COME HOME.
