Chapter 12 - THE STORY GREW LARGER THAN MY MARRIAGE

Once investigators opened Daniel’s office devices, the case widened.

The fraudulent lender packet containing my forged trust pages had not been a one-time act of stupidity. It sat alongside altered income statements, side emails about concealed debt, and pressure messages to an assistant who had questioned discrepancies.

Two former employees came forward within a week.

One said Daniel often bragged that “marriage solved liquidity.”

The other turned over screenshots showing he’d asked someone to backdate internal approval emails tied to the same commercial project Avery’s accountant flagged.

Meanwhile, Vivian’s phone was no better. It contained voice notes complaining that I was “too hard to break,” messages telling a cousin I’d “be quieter after this,” and one text sent twenty-three minutes before the attack: He’s furious. Tonight may settle everything.

The prosecutor upgraded the case.

What began as aggravated battery became attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy, forgery, and financial exploitation related to protected trust assets.

Lena visited every evening she wasn’t on shift. Some nights she brought medical updates. Other nights she brought silence and better coffee than the hospital served. Avery came with binders, timelines, and the kind of exact confidence that makes frightened people breathe easier.

Recovery was ugly. Skin graft discussions. Physical therapy consultations. Nightmares that left me awake before dawn. But as the case expanded, one humiliating truth became almost funny in its own way:

Daniel and Vivian had spent years trying to make me look unstable.

Instead, they had handed a former fraud attorney a fully documented conspiracy.

On the tenth day after the attack, Detective Hale asked if I was ready to give my full recorded statement.

“I’ve been ready,” I said.

“No,” he replied gently. “I mean personally.”

That question landed harder than I expected.

Personally, I wasn’t ready for any of it—photos, timelines, motives, or hearing my own screams on video.

But readiness has never been a feeling.

It’s a decision.

So I said yes.
