Chapter 11 - THE ARREST IN GOOD SHOES

Daniel was arrested the next morning in the parking garage beneath his office.

He had apparently shown up anyway, hoping to retrieve a laptop before the warrant reached reception. Instead, two detectives met him beside the elevator, read the charges, and took him down in the same brown leather shoes he had been so concerned about the night he stepped over me.

Vivian lasted another six hours.

Police found her at the house stuffing paperwork into a shredder and scrubbing the kitchen baseboards with bleach. She told them she was “cleaning for company.” Unfortunately for her, company already included a forensic team.

When Hale later summarized the arrest reports for me, I learned my favorite detail: Vivian initially claimed she barely remembered the attack because she was distraught, then asked one officer whether the shoe towel had been recovered.

She had just placed herself in the scene-cleaning timeline.

Daniel did what most polished men do once handcuffs replace confidence. He reverted to performance. He told officers I had orchestrated a false case to protect hidden assets. He suggested Lena was biased, Avery unethical, and Dr. Sloane politically motivated.

None of it mattered.

The kitchen camera mattered.

The forged documents mattered.

His own recorded statements mattered.

My divorce petition was filed that afternoon along with a request for exclusive control over the house, injunction enforcement, and financial restitution. Daniel’s employer placed him on immediate leave. By evening, one of his partners called Avery asking whether the alleged forged trust documents had ever been shown to their investors.

That was the moment the damage spread beyond criminal court.

Pain still owned most of my body.

But it no longer owned the outcome.

For the first time since Vivian lifted that pot, I slept for almost four continuous hours.

Not because justice was done.

Because it had finally started.
