Chapter 1 - THE WHITE ROOM

When I opened my eyes, all I saw was white.

White curtains. White lights. White bandages wrapped so tightly around my shoulders and back that every breath felt like it was scraping against fire. For a moment, I didn’t know where I was. Then the smell of antiseptic hit me, followed by the steady beep of a monitor, and the memories came back all at once.

Vivian lifting the pot.

The flash of oil in the kitchen light.

My own scream.

Outside the curtain, I heard my husband’s voice in that smooth, polished tone he used on neighbors, bankers, and anyone else he wanted to fool.

“My wife has always been clumsy,” Daniel said with a tired little sigh. “She dropped the pot on herself. My mother tried to help.”

A woman’s voice answered, crisp and skeptical. “You’re saying she accidentally created burn patterns concentrated across her back and shoulders?”

Daniel chuckled softly. “She twists things when she’s emotional.”

Right on cue, Vivian added a trembling sniffle. “We told her not to cook when she was tired. Poor thing never listens.”

I closed my eyes again, not because I was weak, but because I needed to think.

Three years of marriage had taught me exactly how Daniel worked. He never relied on one lie. He built entire rooms out of them, then stood calmly inside while everyone else tried to prove the walls weren’t real.

But there was one thing he had forgotten.

Before I became Rachel Bennett, the wife who cooked on demand and stayed quiet at parties, I had been Rachel Bennett, the fraud attorney who dismantled men like him for a living.

And six months earlier, when Daniel proudly watched me sign a set of “ownership transfer” documents, I had already realized some pages were missing.

That was the moment I started preparing.

As footsteps approached my bed, I made myself breathe through the pain and asked the only question that mattered:

Had I prepared enough?
