Chapter 9 - Carol Made the Wrong Choice Twice

Carol came down the porch steps in heels entirely unsuited for the weather, clutching the blue folder to her chest like it contained leverage.

She did not look embarrassed.

She looked offended.

“You brought a deputy?” she asked. “How very dramatic.”

Dana answered before I could. “Mrs. Halbrook, please return the folder.”

Carol ignored her and turned to me. “You should be ashamed of yourself. Running out into the night with a child over dinner.”

“Over dinner?” I repeated.

She gave a brittle smile. “Children eat what they’re given. Adults don’t smash dishes when their feelings get hurt.”

Jonah squeezed my hand harder.

I felt it.

So did Reed.

His face changed just enough that I knew he was paying attention to the part of this that mattered most.

Dana stepped forward. “Mrs. Halbrook, that folder is private legal property. Return it now.”

Instead, Carol opened it.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

She wanted an audience for whatever she thought she had discovered.

“Perhaps we should all know what Megan has been hiding,” she said.

Garrett’s face had gone from nervous to gray.

He knew more than his mother did.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Carol pulled out the top pages and glanced at them. Her eyes moved faster this time.

Trust documents.

Recorded deed.

Trustee certification.

Then she got to the page Dana had placed immediately behind them.

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Not triumph.

Recognition.

“Garrett,” she said sharply.

He stepped closer. “What?”

She turned the page toward him.

I could not read it from where I stood, but I didn’t need to.

I knew exactly which page she had reached.

Waiver of Marital Management and Occupancy Rights.

Signed by Garrett.

Notarized.

Recorded.

Three years old.

His signature looked back at him from the porch like a witness he had forgotten existed.

I met his eyes.

“Read the next page,” I said.
