Chapter 3 - The Porch Light

We went through the garage into the freezing night.
I buckled Jonah into the back seat, tucked his blanket around him, and shut the door.
Then my headlights swept across the porch.
Someone was standing there.
Carol.
She wasn’t smiling anymore.
One hand gripped the railing. The other held a blue folder against her chest.
My blue folder.
Garrett appeared behind her, and for the first time that night he looked nervous.
Carol lifted the folder slightly, as though she were holding up proof of something she had finally found.
“Looking for this?” she called.
I didn’t move toward her.
I pulled out my phone instead.
“No,” I said quietly. “I was waiting to see what you’d do when you found it.”
That shook Garrett more than it shook Carol.
She opened the folder anyway, confident she had uncovered something she could use against me.
The porch light fell across the first page.
Her eyes moved left to right.
Then stopped.
For one strange second, she forgot to breathe.
Garrett stepped closer. “What is it?”
Carol didn’t answer.
I knew exactly what she was looking at.
Across the top, in bold letters, was the heading:
MORRISON RESIDENCE TRUST
And beneath it:
SOLE TRUSTEE: MEGAN MORRISON
Garrett’s face went pale even before he saw the next page.
I had spent three years letting both of them act as if I was the emotional one, the temporary one, the overworked mother whose salary kept the lights on but whose authority could still be negotiated.
The blue folder contained the one fact they never imagined I had protected properly.
The house was not theirs to control.
Not his.
And certainly not hers.
I started the engine.
Carol looked up from the page at last. “Where are you going?”
I met her eyes through the windshield.
May you like
“To somewhere my son gets fed.”
Then I drove away.
