Chapter 4 - The Hotel With the Microwave

I took Jonah to a small all-night hotel near the interstate because it was clean, anonymous, and had a microwave.

That last detail mattered more than anything.

At eleven-thirty at night, my five-year-old sat cross-legged on a white duvet eating buttered noodles from a paper bowl like they were a feast. I found a cup of applesauce in the vending pantry and a carton of milk.

He ate slowly at first, like he wasn’t sure he was allowed to enjoy it.

Then he got hungry enough to stop being careful.

I sat across from him at the tiny table and watched him eat while my own anger settled into something colder and more useful.

“Did Grandma tell you not to ask for dinner?” I asked gently.

Jonah nodded.

“What did she say?”

He stirred the noodles with his fork. “She said lobster is grown-up food and I’d ruin it.”

“And Daddy?”

He looked down. “Daddy said to just eat the rice so everybody could have a nice night.”

Everybody.

Children notice the mathematics of exclusion long before adults admit it exists.

When he finished eating, I tucked him into the hotel bed, turned on the bathroom light so the room wouldn’t feel too dark, and waited until his breathing evened out.

Then I called my attorney.

Her name was Dana Rivas, and I had consulted her two months earlier for reasons I had never told Garrett.

She answered on the third ring.

“Megan?”

“I need you to tell me exactly how much damage two very stupid people just did to themselves.”

Dana was quiet for a moment. Then she said, “Start at the beginning.”

So I did.

The lobsters.

The cold rice.

The broken plate.

The open drawer.

Carol standing on the porch with the blue folder in her hand.

When I finished, Dana let out a slow breath.

“Did she open it?”

“Yes.”

“Did Garrett see it?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

I closed my eyes. “That doesn’t sound like the word I expected.”

“It’s a very good word,” Dana said. “Because now you don’t have to wonder whether they crossed the line.”
