Chapter 6 - THE HOUSEKEEPER WHO REMEMBERED AMELIA
Her name was Grace Holloway.
She was seventy-three and lived outside Annapolis.
She had cleaned the Miller estate twice a week for nineteen years before Florence dismissed her abruptly twelve years earlier.
Detectives found her through old payroll records.
When she saw Amelia’s photograph, she started crying.
“I wondered when somebody would come back.”
Those words nearly destroyed me.
Grace remembered Amelia.
Not as a bookkeeper.
As “the young woman who kept asking Mr. Miller for invoices.”
Amelia had come to the estate three times during her final week because Harold kept company files in his home office.
On the last night Grace saw her, Florence and Amelia were arguing near the kitchen.
“What about?” Detective Brooks asked.
“Money.”
“What kind of money?”
“I don’t know. But the young woman said, ‘I copied everything. You can’t make this disappear.’”
My hands tightened beneath the interview table.
Grace continued.
Harold came downstairs.
Jonathan was somewhere upstairs.
His younger brother was away.
The argument moved toward the rear corridor.
Grace heard a crash.
Then Florence came into the kitchen and ordered her to leave early.
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Did you see Amelia again?”
“No.”
Grace looked at me.
“But the next morning, Mrs. Miller had me scrub the laundry floor.”
Everything inside me went cold.
“What was on it?”
Grace swallowed.
“Blood.”
Not much, she said.
A streak near the old drain and several droplets along the wall.
Florence claimed Harold cut his hand repairing the basin.
Grace believed her at the time because Harold had a bandage when she returned.
Detectives asked why she never told police.
Grace began crying harder.
“I did.”
The room went silent.
She said an officer interviewed her two months after Amelia disappeared.
She told him everything.
He wrote notes.
Then no one contacted her again.
There was nothing in the surviving case file about blood in the Miller laundry room.
Nothing about the argument.
Nothing about Grace.
Someone had removed her statement.
That changed the investigation again.
