Chapter 11 - WHY HE MARRIED ME ANYWAY

When I confronted Jonathan through our attorneys, he finally stopped pretending ignorance.
He recognized my surname after hearing me mention Amelia during the first Christmas we spent together.
He searched.
Found the old missing-person articles.
Saw photographs.
Remembered her face.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked during the recorded meeting.
His eyes stayed on the table.
“I was afraid.”
“Of losing me?”
“No.”
At least that answer was honest.
“Of what?”
“That you’d reopen everything.”
I felt something inside me go cold.
“So you stayed with me to control me.”
“No.”
“You married the sister of a woman your family helped disappear and said nothing.”
“I loved you.”
I almost laughed.
He continued desperately.
“At first I thought if I knew what you knew, I could tell whether there was danger.”
Danger.
Not grief.
Not truth.
Danger to his family.
Then NexoCloud began failing.
Jonathan discovered I worked inside the Vanguard ecosystem, though he still believed I was administrative staff. He thought proximity to me might help his company receive more favorable consideration.
He claimed he never knew I actually controlled the fund.
Maybe that part was true.
It no longer mattered.
“I convinced myself the past was over,” he whispered. “Dad was dead. Mom was old. Amelia was gone. I thought none of it had anything to do with us.”
“It had everything to do with us.”
He nodded.
Tears ran down his face.
I felt no victory.
Only exhaustion.
Jonathan had spent his entire life learning that protecting family meant protecting lies.
On our wedding night, when he slapped me for refusing his mother, he finally showed me what that training had made him.
Not a murderer.
Not innocent either.
A man who would choose the system every time it asked him to.
The divorce became simple after that.

There was nothing left to negotiate emotionally.
Only property, procedure, and the end.
