Chapter 9 - THE STORY THEY WERE BUILDING ABOUT ME

Once the timing lined up, Laura and Calvin stopped seeing Derek’s actions as separate scandals.
They were one plan.
Medical delay.
Financial access.
A narrative about my instability.
The bank’s fraud investigator found that the forged trust request had included a short typed note from “Marissa” stating that, because the child’s prognosis was poor and the mother was “emotionally exhausted,” the trustee sought a temporary redirection of funds for “urgent family stability.”
Family stability.
That phrase sounded exactly like something Vanessa would write and Derek would approve.
Laura filed another amended motion, this time arguing a pattern of coercive interference with Holly’s care and finances. She also asked the court to restrict Derek’s access to Holly pending investigation.
Then family text messages surfaced.
My aunt Jill sent screenshots from Vanessa in which she said, Marissa is obsessed with miracles and won’t let Holly go peacefully. Another message said, We were trying to protect everyone from her denial.
There it was—the final pillar of their story.
I wasn’t a mother fighting for options.
I was an unstable woman spending too much on false hope.
That is how they meant to take the trust without looking like monsters.
At the hospital, Holly started the first phase of the trial.
She was sick. Tired. Fragile in new ways.
But she was still here.
And the smallest, strangest moment gave me the push I needed. One of the pediatric residents asked where Holly got her stubbornness. Before I could answer, Holly lifted one shoulder and said, “Mommy doesn’t quit.”
Children hear more than we think.
That evening, Calvin showed me the original trust document again. Tucked behind it was one clause I hadn’t focused on before: if anyone attempted to misuse the trust by fraud or coercion, the trustee and protector were authorized to seek enhanced protective remedies and full audits of related financial dealings.
My mother had not simply hidden money.
She had built consequences.
I finally asked the question that had been waiting since Part 3.
“Calvin, did she know it would get this bad?”
He took a long breath.
“I think she knew Derek and Vanessa would stay dishonest as long as dishonesty paid them. She just didn’t know whether they’d aim it at you first or Holly.”
By then, only one major thing remained unclear.
Was Derek sabotaging Boston just to make the trust easier to reach?
Or was there something even uglier in how long he’d been planning around Holly’s illness?
The answer came from a folder Dr. Patel’s office faxed to Laura the next morning.
