Chapter 10 - HE DIDN’T JUST TRY TO TAKE THE MONEY

The major twist wasn’t that Derek wanted Holly’s trust.

By then, we knew that.

The twist was that Derek hadn’t begun interfering with Holly’s care after the relapse.

He had been shaping her medical timeline for months.

Page by page, the records made it unavoidable.

There were two unauthorized consult refusals submitted in my name—one four months earlier, one six weeks earlier. There was the fake portal message postponing aggressive out-of-state options. There was the forged medical authorization for the bank. And there was Holly’s remembered sentence: Daddy said maybe there was a place far away, but you didn’t answer in time.

Three clues had been pointing here all along:

Calvin warning that Derek had interfered not just with money but with care.

The Boston nurse mentioning a consult I never declined.

The forged authorization describing me as emotionally unstable and exhausted.

Together, they revealed the full strategy.

Derek and Vanessa weren’t merely hoping to grab unused trust money if Holly died.

They were trying to make me look like the mother who had declined advanced care—so that when Holly’s condition worsened, they could say I had waited too long, then panicked, then became irrational with grief. In that version of reality, Derek would look practical, Vanessa supportive, and my hold over Holly’s finances and medical decisions would become easier to challenge.

He hadn’t just laughed in the hospital.

He had been quietly writing toward that laugh.

When Laura explained it to the prosecutor, even she sounded shaken.

“Medical sabotage is a loaded word,” she said. “But unauthorized interference with treatment options, especially paired with financial fraud, is something they will take very seriously.”

I sat beside Holly while the first trial infusion began and felt something strange happen.

The anger sharpened into clarity.

Derek wanted me to believe I was late because I was tired, forgetful, overwhelmed.

But I was late because he and Vanessa had been moving appointments, messages, and money in the same direction.

Toward surrender.

Toward theft.

Toward a future where their baby got the resources Holly no longer needed.

That afternoon, the prosecutor’s office requested a formal interview with me and Calvin.

And for the first time since the slap in Holly’s room, I stopped wondering whether Derek would face consequences.

The only real question now was how many.
