Chapter 9 - THE DOCTOR THEY WANTED AFTER MIDNIGHT

Lorraine had booked two professionals around the gala.

The mobile notary at 10:30 p.m.

The concierge physician for 7:00 the next morning.

Investigators initially assumed that meant they planned to get me intoxicated, obtain my signature, then create a convenient medical explanation afterward.

The timing did not fit.

Why would they need the physician after I had already signed?

Then Nora reviewed my trust documents again.

My preferred Whitmore shares were not held directly.

They sat inside the Clairmont Family Trust my father created before his death.

I was trustee.

Ethan was not.

But eight years earlier—during the same emergency estate-planning process around Lily’s birth—I had named Ethan as temporary successor trustee if I became medically incapacitated.

That appointment had never been changed.

Suddenly everything aligned more closely.

If I signed willingly, the sale could close normally.

If I refused but became temporarily incapacitated, Ethan could attempt to assume trustee authority and execute the consent himself.

Whether that attempt would ultimately survive litigation was uncertain.

But transactions happen before litigation finishes.

Asteron might close.

Money might move.

Debt might be repaid.

Later, everyone could argue over validity.

The plan required more than getting me tipsy.

It required a documented incapacity event.

Madison’s statement gained new importance.

She insisted Ethan never explained this to her.

Lorraine told her the medication was intended only to keep me from “blowing up the gala.”

Then prosecutors showed Madison the contingency memorandum.

She stared at it for a long time.

“He was going to use her trust?”

“Yes.”

Madison asked for her lawyer.

After another consultation, she turned over a second phone.

The one Ethan had given her for their affair.

There were deleted messages recovered from its cloud backup.

Lorraine:

If she signs, good. If she melts down, also usable.

Ethan:

No ambulance unless necessary.

Lorraine:

We need a record, not a disaster.

Madison:

This is getting insane.

Ethan:

Then don’t screw it up.

The woman who put something in my drink had known she was crossing a line.

May you like

She had not known how many lines Ethan and Lorraine had already crossed behind her.

And Part 10 revealed the final reason they could not afford to wait even one more week.
