Chapter 5 - MADISON STOPPED PROTECTING ETHAN
Madison asked to speak with prosecutors on the fourth day.
Her lawyer wanted immunity.
She did not get it.
Instead, she received the possibility of cooperation being considered later.
I was not in the room.
Nora received a summary after portions became relevant to the civil case.
Madison admitted the affair.
Two years.
Hotel rooms billed as investor relations.
Weekends described as conferences.
A condo in Austin paid through a consulting entity controlled by one of Whitmore Dynamics’ distributors.
None of it surprised me by then.
What surprised me was what Madison said about the wine.
Ethan told her I had been “spiraling” and threatening to destroy the acquisition because of jealousy.
Lorraine said I needed to get through one evening without making a scene.
Madison obtained the medication through the concierge practice using a corporate card. She claimed she believed the amount placed in my wine would make me relaxed and sleepy, not medically endangered.
That was still criminal behavior.
It was not an excuse.
Then she said something more important.
“Ethan told me Claire had already agreed to sign.”
She had not known my consent was the final legal barrier.
She thought the post-gala meeting was ceremonial.
“Why drug her at all?” the prosecutor asked.
Madison started crying.
“Because Lorraine said if Claire got emotional during the speeches, Pierce would pull the deal.”
“Did Ethan know?”
“Yes.”
“What exactly did he say?”
Madison repeated the sentence I had recorded.
“Just don’t overdo it.”
The meaning was no longer debatable.
Ethan knew something was being put into my drink.
But Madison still insisted the acquisition accounting was legitimate.
Then investigators showed her the distributor links.
Her face changed.
She asked for a break.
When the interview resumed, she admitted Ethan had asked her to route several side agreements outside the main diligence folder.
She thought the purpose was maintaining “commercial flexibility.”
Her brother’s entities were used because Ethan wanted friendly distributors capable of carrying inventory until after closing.
“Did they actually buy the product?”
“On paper.”
There it was.
Not fictional revenue exactly.
Revenue manufactured through transactions designed to look independent when they were not.
Madison had helped.
Then she gave investigators something we did not have.
A message from Lorraine sent three weeks before the gala:
If Claire will not act like family, we need the contingency.
Nobody yet knew what “the contingency” meant.

But Ethan did.
And when police seized his home office under warrant, they found a folder with that exact word printed across the tab.
