Chapter 7 - LILY ASKED WHY DADDY NEEDED MY NAME

Lily sat on the carpet in the evaluator’s office arranging plastic animals into two houses.

A giraffe lived with me.

A lion lived with Ethan.

A small rabbit moved between both.

The evaluator did not ask Lily which parent she preferred.

She asked what had changed.

“Mommy sleeps in the other house now.”

“How do you feel about that?”

“I don’t like moving my backpack.”

A normal seven-year-old answer.

Then:

“Daddy says Mommy stopped his company.”

I kept my face still.

The evaluator noticed.

“Did Daddy say that to you?”

Lily nodded.

“He said Mommy has to sign her name and then everyone can stop being mad.”

That sentence became part of the temporary-custody record.

Ethan’s attorney immediately argued he had merely explained the business situation badly.

Possibly.

But the judge warned both of us against discussing litigation with Lily.

I obeyed.

Ethan stopped calling me unstable in texts after that.

At Whitmore Dynamics, the special committee hired independent forensic accountants with full server access. That required me to authorize examination of my own communications too because I had been a shareholder, former legal adviser, and spouse of the CEO.

Nora warned me.

“Your marriage is going into discovery.”

“So be it.”

Private messages.

Arguments.

Medical discussions after Lily’s birth.

Years of conversations I had never expected strangers to read.

It felt violating.

But selective transparency would let Ethan claim I was hiding context.

I authorized it.

The review found another pattern.

For eighteen months, Ethan had been borrowing against the expected acquisition proceeds through side arrangements that were not properly disclosed to the board. Some personal guarantees were involved. Lorraine had pledged part of her family trust holdings.

If the acquisition failed, they did not simply lose a celebration.

They faced a liquidity crisis.

That explained urgency.

But not desperation.

Then the auditors found an email from Ethan to the CFO:

Pierce cannot see revised Q4 reserve until Claire is locked.

The CFO had answered:

Define locked.

Ethan:

Signed or unavailable. I don’t care which.

The email was dated eleven days before the gala.

For the first time, the contaminated wine looked less like a cruel prank that escalated.

It looked like one branch of a corporate plan.
