Chapter 7 - WHY RUTH LET HER DAUGHTER THINK SHE WAS DEAD

Ruth did not walk across the street to Brenda.
She came inside my house.
Natalie arrived twenty minutes later.
So did Melissa, because Ruth unexpectedly requested a witness who wasn't connected to the legal case.
Ruth sat at Caroline’s old dining table.
For years after 2003, Brenda had apparently told people her mother was dead.
There had been no funeral in Georgia because Ruth supposedly died while living elsewhere.
I asked:
“Why?”
Ruth folded her hands.
“Because I disappeared.”
“From your daughter?”
“From my husband first.”
William Cole.
One of the original Sycamore Falls development partners.
Brenda's father.
Ruth explained that the partnership involved Edward Mercer, Samuel West, and William Cole.
Money disappeared.
William was accused.
Eventually pushed out.
Brenda grew up believing Mercer and West had cheated her father.
“That’s why she hates Caroline?”
“In part.”
Ruth looked toward the window.
“Brenda believes the West family kept what belonged to us.”
“Did they?”
“Some things.”
That answer interested Natalie.
“What happened to the missing money?”
Ruth looked at her.
“It went through an account I controlled.”
I stared.
“You took it?”
“Moved it.”
“Why?”
“Because William discovered the partnership's ownership structure wasn't what the public documents suggested.”
Natalie leaned forward.
Ruth continued.
Several entities had retained rights across different pieces of the development.
Surface ownership.
Access.
Utility corridors.
Easements.
The three men began fighting because a future infrastructure agreement could become extremely valuable.
William wanted to preserve leverage.
Edward wanted the subdivision cleanly marketable.
Samuel wanted out.
Ruth moved money under William's instructions to protect what he claimed was the Cole family's share.
Then everything collapsed.
“Was William stealing?”
Ruth looked tired.
“Yes.”
That surprised me.
“Then Brenda was wrong?”
“Not completely.”
Ruth shook her head.
“Edward and Samuel had hidden things too.”
No pure heroes.
No clean family legend.
Then Ruth explained her disappearance.
William became abusive as the dispute worsened.
After he died, Brenda became obsessed with clearing his name.
Ruth tried telling her the truth.
Brenda refused to hear it.
Their relationship deteriorated.
In 2003, after another confrontation, Ruth left.
“Why let her think you were dead?”
“I didn't.”
Ruth looked at me.
“Brenda decided that story.”
She had stopped correcting it.
That made me uncomfortable.
“Why?”
“Because being dead to my daughter was easier than being alive and useful to her.”
The sentence stayed with me.
Then Ruth opened the survey tube.
Inside was an old unrecorded deed.
Grantor:
Sycamore Falls Residential Corporation.
Grantee:
Caroline Elizabeth Pruitt.
Tract:
17B.
I stared at my wife's name.
“She owned it?”
“Maybe.”
Natalie immediately said:
“We need to establish whether this deed was validly delivered, accepted, and what later title events occurred.”
I pointed at her.
“See? This is why nobody invites lawyers to Christmas.”
Ruth almost smiled.
Then handed me a letter.
Caroline's handwriting.
Dale thinks Brenda is merely obnoxious.
Maybe he's right.
I'm not turning our retirement into a war over a drainage strip until I know why it matters.

I laughed once.
Then cried.
