Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA BEHIND THE GARAGE

The dumpster itself gave police almost nothing useful.

Family fingerprints meant little.

We had all used the area during the week.

Then one of the caterers called.

Their refrigerated van had been delivered before dawn.

Its security system recorded continuously when parked.

The camera faced part of my parents’ driveway.

Not the dumpster directly.

At 6:38 a.m., my father crossed the driveway carrying Lily.

She was wrapped in her purple blanket.

Her head rested against his shoulder.

No visible struggle.

At 6:41, Vanessa followed with a black garbage bag.

At 6:47, Dad returned alone.

Vanessa returned at 6:49.

No Lily.

My mother appeared at 6:53 carrying the purple blanket back toward the house.

That destroyed the wandering story.

Still, nobody could see precisely who placed Lily inside the dumpster.

Dad changed his explanation.

They had moved Lily into the detached garage because she was sleeping and guests were arriving.

Vanessa supposedly found her gone later.

Mom insisted she thought Lily was resting on a cot.

Then police searched the garage.

No cot.

No bedding.

No evidence anyone had prepared a place for a sleeping child.

What they did find was a folding table.

On it:

A printer.

Stacks of party paperwork.

And a manila folder labeled:

CLAIRE / LILY.

My stomach tightened.

Inside were printed text messages between me and Marcus.

Copies of Lily’s preschool attendance.

A photograph of my apartment building.

Notes about my work schedule.

And several pages titled:

TEMPORARY CARE PLAN.

I read the first paragraph.

Due to Claire Morgan’s emotional instability and upcoming marriage, Lily Morgan would temporarily reside with maternal grandparents Robert and Diane Morgan.

I stared at Detective Bell.

“I’ve never seen this.”

The next page contained statements.

Vanessa:

CLAIRE OFTEN PRIORITIZES MARCUS OVER LILY.

Dad:

LILY HAS RECENTLY BECOME UNSUPERVISED AND DIFFICULT.

Mom:

WE ARE CONCERNED CLAIRE IS RUSHING INTO MARRIAGE.

None was signed.

Yet.

Marcus looked at me.

“This was prepared before this morning.”

Yes.

The dumpster was not the beginning.

My family had already been building a case that I was failing my daughter.

Then the detective turned another page.

Financial institution:

Westbridge Trust Company.

Beneficiary:

Lily Grace Morgan.

I recognized neither the account nor the number beside it.

$2,318,442.

I looked at my mother.

For the first time, she refused to meet my eyes.
