Chapter 14 - VANESSA’S LAST EXPLANATION

Vanessa asked for one meeting before her case reached its final resolution.
Lawyers present.
No children.
She looked exhausted.
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
She looked offended.
“Of course.”
“I don’t have enough room for that anymore.”
Her eyes filled.
Then she tried the explanation she had been saving.
“You were always Mom’s favorite.”
I stared.
“What?”
“You got Grandma’s attention. Scholarships. The better college.”
“I worked.”
“So did I.”
“I never said you didn’t.”
“Then Grandma leaves millions for your daughter.”
“Not me.”
“Same thing.”
There it was.
Lily had become my stand-in.
Vanessa believed every benefit reaching my child was another verdict on our childhood.
“What did Emma have to do with it?”
“She deserved something that was hers.”
“So you took Lily’s.”
Vanessa flinched.
“We borrowed.”
“You put my daughter in a dumpster.”
“I didn’t think she’d stay unconscious.”
The sentence was monstrous because Vanessa seemed to believe it helped.
“She was breathing.”
“Four years old.”
“I checked.”
“Then you closed the lid.”
Silence.
“Why?”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“Because for once I wanted you to know what it felt like to see your child treated like she didn’t matter.”
I stared at her.
“You wanted to punish me through Lily.”
She cried.
“I know.”
That was motive stripped clean.
The trust created pressure.
Guardianship created strategy.
Childhood resentment supplied cruelty.
None excused the other.
Before leaving, Vanessa said:
“Emma misses Lily.”
“I know.”
“Will you keep letting them see each other?”
“If it remains healthy and both children want it.”
Her face tightened.
“You get to decide everything now.”
“No.”
I stood.
May you like
“That’s the difference.”
“Lily gets to matter in the decision too.”
