Chapter 10 - THEY NEEDED LILY TO DISAPPEAR LONG ENOUGH TO MAKE ME LOOK UNFIT

The major twist came from the guardianship file.

The petition was dated.

Prepared.

Almost ready.

Hearing request planned for Monday.

Attached draft affidavit:

On the morning of June 14, Claire Morgan became preoccupied with engagement festivities and failed to notice that her four-year-old daughter had left the residence.

My hands went cold.

That sentence had been written before June 14.

Before Lily disappeared.

Before I woke up.

The rest described what was supposed to happen.

Lily would be “found” later.

Upset.

Sleepy.

Possibly dirty.

Family witnesses would say I had been focused on Marcus and the party.

My parents would present themselves as the stable alternative.

Vanessa would testify that Lily had become increasingly distressed about my marriage.

Then they would ask for temporary guardianship while my “fitness” was evaluated.

Three clues snapped together.

The replacement birthday party for Emma.

My mother’s unnatural calm while I searched.

And Dad’s immediate statement that Lily had wandered before anyone knew where she was.

They were not reacting to a missing child.

They were performing roles written in advance.

The intended hiding place had initially been the garage.

Vanessa changed it.

Her messages after the fact made that clear.

She wanted something more humiliating.

More convincing.

A child literally found in garbage while her mother celebrated an engagement.

A perfect photograph for the story:

Claire chose a man.

Lily paid the price.

Then another record made the motive uglier.

The trust accounting showed approximately $186,000 in distributions requiring serious explanation.

Not two million stolen.

Not some cartoon empty account.

Enough.

Vanessa’s household had received the largest questionable benefit.

My parents were next.

If Margaret removed Mom as trustee and demanded repayment, the financial damage would be severe.

The family needed me discredited before the accounting became the story.

Guardianship would not magically erase the missing money.

Their plan was legally foolish.

But emotionally strategic.

If I became:

Unstable mother.

Neglectful mother.

Woman obsessed with her fiancé.

Then anything I said about trust misuse could be framed as retaliation.

That was the horrifying family secret.

My parents and sister had not simply preferred Emma.

They had spent years using Lily’s assets to subsidize the “perfect” child and the adults around her.

Then, when scrutiny arrived, they attempted to use Lily herself as evidence against me.

Vanessa looked at me during a later court appearance.

I finally understood her sentence from that morning.

Some kids are just easier to celebrate.

Emma had been easier because Emma’s existence never threatened the system.

Lily’s did.
