Chapter 7 - Derek Tried to Rewrite Me

Derek struck back in the oldest possible way.
He didn’t deny the bakery scene publicly. He reframed it.
Within forty-eight hours, he had people whispering that his “emotionally unstable ex” was making bizarre claims after turning up visibly pregnant with another man’s child. One gossip site ran a blind item about a “finance founder facing extortion from a former girlfriend.” Another mentioned a feared shipping magnate and hinted at blackmail.
He knew exactly what he was doing.
Women are always easier to discredit when you can make them sound messy.
Nora’s answer was immediate and disciplined. She sent cease-and-desist letters where appropriate, but more importantly, she filed a demand for books and records, a notice asserting my ownership claim, and an emergency petition to prevent any dilution, transfer, or sale of assets while the dispute was pending.
“Public gossip is noise,” she told me. “Control of the corporate record is leverage.”
Meanwhile, Dante did something unexpected: he stayed out of the headlines.
No interviews. No dramatic statements. No theatrical threats.
He simply tightened every possible commercial door around Derek.
Prospective lenders got nervous.
A planned investor dinner was canceled.
One board observer demanded clarifications about cap-table integrity.
And because Wall Street types can survive scandal more easily than uncertainty, Derek started bleeding credibility almost immediately.
Then he made a mistake born from panic.
He sent me a direct message from a number I didn’t recognize:
We can settle this privately. You were never supposed to understand the paper.
I stared at the screen until my hands went cold.
Then I forwarded it to Nora.
She replied one sentence:
Good. Keep every stupid thing he sends.
By then I understood something painful and clarifying at the same time.
Derek had never loved my gentleness.
May you like
He had loved my reluctance to escalate.
And the second I stopped protecting his image, he had nothing solid left except forged paper and bad instincts.
