Chapter 10 - I Wasn’t His Ex-Girlfriend — I Was His Hidden Majority

The major twist came ten days after the bakery, in Nora’s conference room, when the former accountant’s records finally arrived.

Three earlier clues snapped together at once.

First, Derek had rushed me out of any room where his origin story might be discussed.

Second, he had panicked at the black folder instead of laughing at my supposed irrelevance.

Third, he’d admitted in front of Nora that my money was “fuel” for the company.

The accountant’s archive filled in the rest.

My $250,000 seed note had not simply converted into a minor stake.

Because of the specific warrant language Derek persuaded me to sign in those early days—and because later financing rounds triggered anti-dilution protection—I had not ended up with a symbolic interest.

I had ended up, on paper, with enough rights to control the company once the defaults and concealed conversions were corrected.

Derek had spent years acting like I was a humiliating reminder of his broke past.

Legally, I was the hidden majority he had buried to make his empire look clean.

Worse for him, Victor’s team had also purchased a chunk of distressed debt Derek had recently taken on through one of his holding companies. Once the concealed ownership issue surfaced, the debt covenants were breached automatically.

Nora set the corrected structure in front of me.

“If the court recognizes the original instruments and invalidates the forged waivers,” she said, “you are not just a creditor. You are likely the controlling equity holder.”

I could barely speak.

“So the board dinner comment…”

Dante answered from the end of the table.

“He kept you out because the woman he mocked as unpresentable was, in legal substance, the person whose money built the room.”

I sat there staring at the pages.

Derek thought humiliating me in public would prove how thoroughly he had outgrown me.

Instead, the paperwork proved something else:

he had never actually outrun the woman he built his company on.

He had only hidden her.

And now the hiding was over.
