Chapter 2 - The Day the Room Chose a Side
Derek never reached the folder.
One of Dante’s security men stepped forward so quickly that even Derek’s fiancée stumbled back in surprise. Plates rattled. Someone near the counter gasped. The room, which had been happy to watch me get humiliated, suddenly remembered that public cruelty can become dangerous when the wrong witness walks in.
“Sit down,” Dante said.
He didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t have to.
Derek stopped moving. His face had gone pale in that way expensive men turn pale when they realize money will not solve the next ten minutes.
The lawyer calmly opened the folder and slid out three documents.
A default notice.
A debt-purchase agreement.
And what looked like a capitalization summary with my name highlighted in yellow.
Derek looked at the pages and then at Dante. “You can’t do this here.”
Dante’s expression did not change. “You embarrassed the mother of my child here. We can begin here.”
Tiffany found her voice first. “Derek, what is this?”
He didn’t answer her.
The lawyer did. “Your fiancé has been negotiating financing through entities tied to Mr. Cassano. During due diligence, we discovered material omissions, forged waivers, and an outstanding convertible instrument tied to Ms. Chloe Bennett.”
I stared at him. “Tied to me?”
Dante looked at me, not Derek. “You need to sit down.”
I did, mostly because my knees felt unreliable.
The lawyer continued. “Mr. Channing represented himself as having unencumbered control of Channing Capital. That representation appears false.”
Derek’s jaw tightened. “She has no claim.”
The lawyer slid one page closer to me.
At the top, beneath CHANNING CAPITAL FORMATION SCHEDULE, was a line that made my skin go cold:
Convertible Seed Note — Chloe Bennett — Status: Unresolved / Concealed
Dante looked at the page, then back at Derek.
“That,” he said, “is the second thing you stole.”
I didn’t understand the full shape of it yet.
But I knew one thing with perfect clarity:
Derek had not just insulted me in public.
