Chapter 4 - The Folder Under Ryan’s Desk

The MPs did not simply let Dad search our house because he was my father.
Investigators obtained proper authority for evidence relevant to the assault and coercive-control allegations.
I gave written consent for certain personal property and documents belonging to me to be collected.
That was how they found the blue folder.
It was beneath Ryan’s home-office desk.
My name was written on the front.
Inside were copies of:
our marriage certificate,
my driver’s license,
my mother’s death certificate,
the deed to a townhouse in Alexandria, Virginia,
brokerage statements,
and a draft durable power of attorney.
My townhouse.
Not Ryan’s.
My mother left it to me five years before we married.
I rented it out and used the income to help fund my graduate-school loans.
Ryan had always resented it.
He called it:
“Your escape house.”
The draft power of attorney gave Ryan broad authority over banking, real estate, tax filings, insurance, and medical-administrative matters if I became incapacitated.
I had never seen it.
There was also a draft postnuptial agreement.
It proposed pledging the Alexandria property as collateral for a line of credit benefiting an LLC called:
Carter Residential Ventures.
I turned to Dad.
“What is that?”
He didn’t know.
Investigators did.
Ryan had formed it eight months earlier.
He and an Army buddy planned to buy distressed rental homes near military installations.
The first deal failed.
The second became expensive.
By the time I was six months pregnant, Ryan personally owed nearly $180,000 between business debt, credit cards, and a private bridge loan.
I knew none of it.
Inside the folder was another page.
Handwritten.
Ryan’s writing.
Emily signs before delivery.
Underneath:
If she refuses — competency / POA route.
My stomach turned.
Dad read it over my shoulder.
For several seconds he was completely still.
Then he said:
“This isn’t about one bad night.”
No.
It wasn’t.
But we still misunderstood the real target.
The townhouse and money were part of it.
Not all of it.

The next document would prove Ryan and Linda were planning for something that would happen after our daughter was born.
And they had already started building a story where I would not be trusted to make decisions for her.
