Chapter 11 - Linda Said She Was Protecting Her Son
Linda refused to see herself as an abuser.
That remained true even after investigators confronted her with the medication, the notebook, the canceled appointments, and the message threads.
She called herself a mother.
A practical woman.
A person protecting her son from a manipulative wife.
During one recorded interview, she said:
“Emily was going to ruin Ryan financially.”
The investigator asked:
“By refusing to pledge property she owned before marriage?”
Linda hesitated.
Then:
“In marriage, people share.”
That sentence explained more than she intended.
To Linda, my boundaries were betrayal.
My property was selfishness.
My father’s involvement was interference.
My pregnancy made me vulnerable enough that she believed resistance itself was evidence I needed managing.
Ryan had grown up inside that logic.
It explained him.
It did not excuse him.
Linda eventually faced charges and legal consequences tied to conduct prosecutors believed they could prove—particularly medication misuse, coercive participation, and evidence-supported involvement in the scheme.
Not every ugly message became a separate crime.
Not every cruel act fit neatly inside a statute.
But enough did.
She also lost something no judge ordered.
Ryan stopped blaming me and began blaming her.
Predictably.
When his own consequences became real, he claimed Linda had manipulated him.
She claimed she had only followed his concerns about my mental health.
The alliance that kept me trapped collapsed the moment accountability entered the room.
I watched none of that with satisfaction.
Mostly I felt embarrassed that I had once believed they were an unbreakable team.
They weren’t.
