Chapter 9 - Daniel’s First Marriage Had No Wife in It

Eight months after I found the camera footage, Dad called.
“I found something strange.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Daniel’s 2011 loan application.”
Before we met.
Marital status:
Married.
Spouse:
Marianne Cole Bennett.
I had never heard the name.
Daniel told me he had never been married.
Records showed a brief marriage.
Then divorce proceedings.
Then a sealed settlement.
Hannah immediately said:
“Patricia once mentioned a crazy ex.”
I remembered.
Not wife.
Ex.
Always unnamed.
Dad found Marianne through an attorney.
She agreed to talk.
She was forty-three.
A pharmacist.
Calm.
Careful.
She had one question before meeting me.
“Do you drink tea at Patricia’s house?”
My entire body went cold.
“What?”
Marianne closed her eyes.
“Then she did it again.”
I could barely speak.
“What did she do to you?”
Marianne looked at me.
“Not exactly what she did to you.”
May you like
Then:
“But close enough.”
