Chapter 11 - Patricia’s Sister Had Seen It Before Either of Us

Marianne brought another name.

Helen Bennett.

Patricia’s older sister.

Estranged for thirty years.

Patricia told everyone Helen had stolen from their parents.

Helen’s version was simpler.

Their parents owned a small commercial building.

Patricia wanted it pledged to support Walter’s first business venture.

Helen refused.

Family war followed.

Patricia called her greedy.

Unstable.

Jealous.

Eventually Helen forced the property into a formal sale rather than let Walter control it.

Patricia never forgave her.

Daniel grew up hearing:

“Aunt Helen destroyed Grandpa’s legacy.”

Helen looked at me across Dad’s office and said:

“He was raised on one lesson.”

“What?”

“If a woman controls property the family needs, she is the problem.”

That did not excuse Daniel.

It explained why none of this felt outrageous to him.

Marianne’s condo.

My apartment building.

Helen’s commercial share.

Different women.

Same moral equation.

Family need outranked female ownership.

Helen had one more piece.

Patricia had once told her, years before Daniel met me:

“My son will never marry someone who keeps one foot outside the family.”

When Daniel discovered I owned a building worth millions, Patricia did not see danger.

She saw opportunity.

And perhaps, in her own warped logic, a solution to the kind of family insecurity she had spent her whole life fearing.
