The photographs.
The affair.
The custody consultation.
Knowing Patricia gave me something intended to make me sleep.
He said he convinced himself it was mild.
Temporary.
Safe.
Then:
I never wanted you harmed.
I believed him.
That was the tragedy.
He had not sat down one morning and decided:
I want to destroy my wife.
He decided smaller things.
Mom knows best.
Claire is stubborn.
The loan will work.
She will forgive me.
One signature solves everything.
A little pressure isn't abuse.
A little medication isn't poison.
A misleading photograph isn't a lie if it shows something that really happened.
By the time the small decisions formed something monstrous, Daniel still believed his intentions separated him from what he had done.
