Chapter 9 - The House They Were Building for an Investigation

Paula’s spending records reconstructed the seventy-two hours after the CPS voicemail.
Day one:
new groceries.
new bedding.
childproof locks.
toys.
books.
Day two:
storage unit.
old furniture removed.
door repaired.
fresh paint over scuff marks.
Day three was supposed to be the CPS visit.
Ruby would return from my house after everything looked different.
Investigators also found text messages between Paula and Sergio.
Paula: Robert has her until Monday.
Sergio: Good.
Paula: We need the room done tomorrow.
Sergio: Toss the chair.
Paula: Storage first. We may need it if this blows over.
That line mattered.
They were not merely cleaning.
They were preserving things for later use.
Another:
Sergio: Pantry needs normal kid food.
Paula: Buy stuff she’ll recognize.
Normal kid food.
As a stage direction.
Then:
Paula: What do we tell her about Alvarez?
Sergio: Teacher hates me.
Paula: Ruby repeats everything.
Sergio: Then Robert keeps her until she forgets what she said.
I felt physically ill.
They trusted me because I had always been Paula’s safe relative.
I would feed Ruby.
Keep her entertained.
Return her Monday.
No questions.
Paula knew I worked long hours and had no children of my own.
She assumed I would be grateful for the visit.
That explained why she panicked when I texted:
We need to talk about Ruby. Emergency.
She and Sergio drove straight back.
Not to comfort Ruby.
To retrieve her before I spoke to anyone.
Still, one thing didn’t fit.
Why had Paula told CPS by phone that Ruby would be home for the scheduled visit?
Denise showed me the call summary.
Paula had specifically confirmed:
Ruby will be present.
Yet she had arranged for Ruby to stay with me until after the visit.
“That’s an obvious lie.”
“Yes.”
“Wouldn’t that make them suspicious immediately?”
“Yes.”
“So why do it?”
Denise didn’t answer.
Then Elena brought us something Ruby had said at school two weeks earlier.
During pretend play, another child asked Ruby to be the mother.
Ruby answered:
“I can’t. Moms have to remember the words.”
“What words?” Elena had asked.
Ruby whispered:
“The words for the lady.”
A script.
Paula wasn’t planning for Ruby to miss the CPS visit.
She was planning to bring Ruby back only when the apartment—and Ruby—were ready.
Those three days weren’t simply about hiding evidence.
They were rehearsal time.
May you like
Except Ruby had been left with the one adult who unknowingly broke the rehearsal.
Me.
