Chapter 5 - Gloria Wanted Sophie
The guardianship petition changed everything.
Gloria described herself as the responsible adult who had tried unsuccessfully to stop Marissa that morning.
She wrote:
I repeatedly warned my daughter not to involve Sophie in a confrontation with her employer.
The security footage showed the opposite.
Gloria stood behind Marissa with her phone prepared while Sophie climbed the stairs.
She never intervened.
She never called the child back.
Another paragraph claimed:
I have become increasingly concerned about Marissa using Sophie to manipulate employment situations.
Increasingly?
This was supposedly the first time.
How could Gloria have an increasing concern about conduct she claimed to witness only that morning?
Marissa’s attorney noticed too.
Family court did not immediately transfer custody.
Instead, because CPS was already investigating, the judge ordered a temporary safety arrangement.
Sophie remained with Marissa but spent nights for two weeks with Marissa’s older sister, Erin, who lived nearby and had no involvement in the conflict.
Gloria requested Sophie stay with her.
The court declined.
I met Erin once during the investigation.
She apologized before sitting down.
“You don’t owe me an apology.”
“My family does.”
“That’s different.”
Erin told me Gloria had always been intensely involved in Marissa’s life.
Jobs.
Relationships.
Parenting.
After Sophie’s father left when she was one, Gloria became even more controlling.
“She says Marissa needs her.”
“Does she?”
“Sometimes.”
Erin paused.
“But Mom needs Marissa to need her more.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Sophie’s father, Eric Dalton, was alive but inconsistent.
He lived in Florida and had not exercised regular parenting time in almost a year.
CPS contacted him.
He expressed concern.
Then said his work travel made immediate placement impossible.
No heroic father arrived to solve things.
Reality rarely provides substitutes on schedule.
Marissa entered counseling voluntarily.
She also agreed to a parenting evaluation.
Gloria called her constantly.
Marissa stopped answering.
Then Gloria sent a message:
You ruined everything by confessing.
Marissa saved it.
Another:
I was trying to make sure Sophie had one stable adult.
Marissa replied:
You told me Daniel was throwing us onto the street.
Gloria:
He would have eventually. Men with money always do.

No mention of the severance letter she had signed for.
That omission became more important than anyone understood yet.
