Chapter 13 - The Photograph Gloria Never Got

I eventually sold the house.

For months after the incident, I hated walking into my bedroom.

Not because anything terrible had physically happened there.

Because I knew someone had planned what the room was supposed to become.

A scene.

Evidence.

A story I would have to disprove.

I removed the camera system only after the litigation hold ended and all relevant footage was preserved.

The new owner asked why there were so many security sensors.

“Long story.”

That was all I said.

Before moving, I found a small stuffed rabbit beneath the guest-room sofa.

Sophie’s.

I gave it to Rebecca.

“Can you return this through Marissa’s lawyer?”

She smiled.

“Absolutely.”

A week later, Marissa sent back a photograph through counsel.

Sophie holding the rabbit.

Nothing else.

No apology.

No message.

That was better.

Then Marissa’s attorney asked whether I would accept a written statement for the employment record.

I agreed.

It was short.

I participated in an attempt to manufacture a confrontation involving Daniel Brooks. My mother manipulated my fears, but I made my own decision and accept responsibility for it. Daniel did not threaten or intentionally harm Sophie.

That document mattered more to me than a sentimental apology.

It corrected the public accusation.

Eventually Marissa posted a similar correction online.

No dramatic confession.

No naming Gloria’s every offense.

Just:

The allegation that Daniel Brooks intentionally harmed my daughter was false. I regret my role in creating the situation.

Some people apologized to me.

Others had already forgotten.

That was another lesson.

Public suspicion spreads much faster than public correction.

But I stopped trying to control what strangers believed.

The police report existed.

The video existed.

The truth existed.

That had to be enough.
