Chapter 2 - The Camera Above the Staircase

I didn’t argue with them.

I called my attorney.

Then I called police.

Gloria seemed delighted.

“Good. Call them.”

Marissa didn’t.

She sat at the kitchen table holding Sophie while her knee bounced uncontrollably.

Sophie kept asking for apple juice.

I poured some.

Gloria said:

“Don’t give her anything.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“She’s upset.”

Sophie immediately stopped reaching for the cup.

That bothered me too.

Officer James Keating arrived with a second officer.

They separated us.

I told them exactly what happened.

No embellishment.

I had been asleep after returning from a business trip at 3:00 a.m.

I woke with Sophie on my chest.

I sat upright.

She slid onto the mattress.

Gloria appeared filming.

That was it.

Gloria told a more dramatic version.

According to her, she had heard Sophie scream, ran upstairs, and saw me “throwing her away from myself.”

Then she added:

“He was furious that Marissa brought her to work.”

That was false.

I had never been angry about Sophie being downstairs.

Officer Keating asked whether the house had cameras.

“Yes.”

Gloria looked at me.

I saw something pass across her face.

Then relief.

“The bedroom?” she asked.

“No.”

She smiled slightly.

But there was a camera above the main staircase.

Another in the downstairs hall.

And one facing the rear mudroom entrance Marissa normally used.

I pulled up the security application.

The staircase camera showed Marissa and Sophie at 9:09.

Marissa crouched beside her daughter.

We couldn’t hear everything clearly.

But then Sophie began climbing the stairs.

Marissa remained at the bottom.

Gloria appeared behind her.

At 9:10, Gloria raised her phone.

Already recording.

Nobody followed Sophie.

Nobody called her back.

Nobody looked surprised when she disappeared toward my bedroom.

Officer Keating replayed it.

Then asked Marissa:

“You said she wandered away while you were folding laundry.”

Marissa stared at the table.

Gloria answered.

“She did.”

The officer turned toward her.

“I asked Marissa.”

Silence.

Then the camera audio gave us four words.

Marissa’s voice.

Soft.

But audible.

“Go wake Mr. Daniel.”

Marissa began crying.

Gloria said:

“That proves nothing.”

Officer Keating looked at her.

“It proves the child didn’t wander.”

Sophie was not injured.

Paramedics found no reason for emergency treatment, though police recommended her pediatrician evaluate her if Marissa had concerns.

No one was arrested that morning.

But the officers documented everything.

And because the incident involved an adult intentionally sending a three-year-old unsupervised into another adult’s bedroom, child protective services was notified.

Gloria immediately asked:

“If they investigate Marissa, can Sophie stay with me?”

Officer Keating looked at her.

The question seemed reasonable.

At the time.

Later, I would realize Gloria had asked it far too quickly.
