Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE ERIC COULD NO LONGER ENTER

Eric accepted a cooperation agreement.
His testimony helped connect Pritchard to Sebastian’s network and confirmed that he had been paid to pressure Claire into retrieving the ledger.
He also admitted threatening to interfere with Lily’s custody because he knew nothing frightened Claire more.
That confession mattered in family court.
Eric’s previous parental claims connected to Lily were terminated through the proper process after evidence showed he had abandoned the household, committed financial fraud against Claire, and later used the child as leverage in criminal conduct.
Claire received formal protection orders.
For the first time since Eric disappeared, she no longer checked every strange car outside Lily’s hospital.
The debts he created were separated and challenged where signatures had been forged.
Her life did not become magically easy.
She still worked.
Still budgeted.
Still sat beside dialysis machines.
Still woke some mornings terrified that Lily’s numbers would worsen.
But fear was no longer steering every decision.
Nathaniel offered her permanent residence at the estate.
Claire refused.
“I need something in my own name.”
He did not argue.
Instead, one of his legitimate property companies offered her information about several apartments—at ordinary market terms, no secret discounts.
She chose a small two-bedroom place fifteen minutes from the hospital.
When she told Nathaniel, he looked disappointed.
Lily was less diplomatic.
“But Mr. Nate lives here.”
“Yes.”
“And he’s lonely.”
Nathaniel nearly dropped his coffee.
Claire smiled.
“He’ll survive.”
Lily looked at his scars.

“He’s good at that.”
No one had an answer for her.
