Chapter 8 - Lindsey Was Waiting in Another State
Lindsey Shaw had accepted a job in North Carolina.
Start date:
September.
Caroline had helped her look at houses.
One property listing showed:
Three bedrooms.
Fenced yard.
Elementary school nearby.
Saved under Caroline’s account.
A message:
Lindsey:
June would love the purple room.
Caroline:
Don't say that yet.
Lindsey:
Sorry.
Another:
Do you really think Rachel will agree to relocation?
Caroline:
She won't have to agree to everything forever.
I stopped reading.
Caroline was not merely planning a divorce.
She was imagining a life with my daughter in another state.
That did not mean she could legally take June away.
It did mean she wanted enough legal parental standing to ask.
And enough documented caregiving history to make the request look plausible.
Then I remembered the first strange clue.
At the hospital, before anyone discussed adoption or divorce, Caroline said:
She is my daughter too.
Not emotional language.
