Chapter 7 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE ROOM

The pump shed sat only fifteen feet from the pool, a plain concrete structure with peeling paint and a smell of chlorine baked into the walls.

From the outside, it looked too small to hold much more than pipes and filter equipment. But when the engineer examined the slab, he found a section that had been poured differently. Newer. Hollow-sounding beneath the surface.

By then, I was outside the tape line with two officers standing close enough to stop me if I tried to rush forward.

They cut the power. Removed the shelving. Broke through the slab.

Beneath it was not a crawl space, as I had half expected, but a narrow service chamber accessed by a steel ladder. It connected to an older filtration vault that predated the shed renovation. It had probably been sealed off years earlier when the pool system was updated.

That was why Emily called it the loud room.

When the pump ran, that buried vault would have sounded like a machine breathing underground.

But when deputies climbed down with flashlights, the chamber was empty.

I felt a wave of disappointment so violent it made me dizzy.

Then one of the crime-scene officers called up that they had found something wedged behind a pipe bracket.

It was a silver key taped beneath the metal frame.

Attached to it was a tag cut from a child’s craft kit.

A hand-drawn mermaid was glued onto the paper.

The same kind of cheap sticker Emily used to put on everything.

Bennett looked at the key, then at me. “Does that mean anything?”

Not to me.

But maybe to Emily.

Back at the hospital, I showed her a photograph of the tag instead of the actual evidence. Her eyes widened instantly.

“Mom made that.”

“What for?”

“She said if I ever had to hide a secret, mermaids are better than boxes because boxes make people nosy.”

It was such a Sarah thing to say that I nearly broke apart right there.

“Do you know what the key opens?”

Emily nodded once.

“The basement cabinet. The old one. Jason didn’t know.”

The basement search that followed uncovered a locked utility cabinet behind stacked paint cans. Inside was a small fireproof safe bolted to the wall.

In that safe were three things that blew the case open wider.

A second flash drive.

Sarah’s wedding ring wrapped in tissue.

And a handwritten letter dated three days earlier.

The first line read:

May you like

If you’re reading this, Jason found the first hiding place sooner than I hoped.

My hands shook before I even got to the second paragraph.
