Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH UNDER THE WATER

The next morning brought the twist that made the whole case snap into focus.

It started with the DVR recovered from the pool.

Lab technicians managed to salvage enough footage from the waterproof-wrapped unit to reconstruct short segments from the backyard camera system Jason thought he had destroyed. Most of the files were damaged. But three clips survived.

The first showed Sarah carrying two black bags to the pool by herself the afternoon before she disappeared. She looked terrified, checking over her shoulder twice before pushing the weighted bags into the water.

The second showed Jason finding one of the empty safe compartments inside the basement, then storming into the backyard hours later with Sarah following him. They fought near the pool. She tried to block him. He struck her across the head with something metal.

That was clue number one fulfilled: Mommy tried to stop him.

The third clip was later that night. Jason dragged Sarah toward the pump shed while Emily pounded helplessly on the back door. Minutes later, he emerged alone, then crossed the yard carrying more black bags and threw them into the pool.

Clue number two: Mrs. Harris had really seen him dumping bags into the water.

What were in those later bags? Not a body. Not random trash.

They contained the smashed laptop, the bloody towel, the burner phones, and items Jason believed would either destroy Sarah’s evidence or make it look like she had fled in panic.

Clue number three: Emily begging me not to look at the pool had not come only from fear of what was there. It came from knowing the pool was where both her mother’s secret and Jason’s violence had collided.

The biggest revelation, though, was in the audio.

Before Jason dragged Sarah away, the camera microphone caught him shouting, “You think if Ethan finds this, he can save you?”

He knew my name.

He knew Sarah had prepared for me specifically.

And he knew exactly what the evidence could do to him.

That was the part that turned the case from abuse and false imprisonment into a calculated effort to silence a witness and stage a disappearance.

Jason hadn’t been improvising.

He had been building this.

By noon, a statewide warrant became a federal fugitive pickup because investigators had evidence he intended to cross state lines using forged documents recovered from Sarah’s files.

And Sarah, after finally stabilizing, asked to speak.

What she told us next made me understand just how close we had come to losing both of them.
