Chapter 6 - THE MOTHER I THOUGHT HAD TURNED AWAY

I had spent a long time blaming Sarah for the distance that had grown between me and Emily.
Not completely. Divorce is rarely that simple. But enough that I had built a comfortable story around it. Sarah remarried too quickly. Jason tightened control over the house. Emily changed. Sarah stopped cooperating the way she once had. Calls got shorter. Schedule changes became harder. I told myself she was choosing a new life and letting my daughter disappear inside it.
The evidence on Bennett’s table shattered that story.
The flash drive from the cash box held twenty-three files.
Some were scans of bank statements. Some were photographs of bruises on Sarah’s arms, shoulders, and ribs. Some were screenshots of text messages from Jason threatening to “finish” her financially if she ever tried to leave with Emily. One file was a typed journal listing dates, incidents, and witnesses.
March 4 — Jason locked pantry. Emily cried because she was hungry. Said I spoil her.
April 19 — Grabbed my wrist in garage. Left bruises. Said Ethan would never win if I called police because I “always go back.”
June 2 — Told Emily her dad stopped calling because he had a new family now. That was a lie.
That line nearly made me sick.
But the worst file was a draft petition prepared by a lawyer I didn’t recognize.
It was an emergency motion for protective custody.
Sarah had started to leave him.
She just hadn’t gotten far enough.
Bennett stood across from me with her arms folded. “This changes our view of your ex-wife.”
“It changes mine too.”
That afternoon, Trina arranged for me to sit with Emily again. I didn’t ask hard questions. I just told her she was safe. That no one was taking her back to that house. That whatever Jason or anyone else told her, she had not done anything wrong.
Emily studied my face for a long time.
Then she whispered, “Mom was trying.”
I swallowed hard.
“I know.”
“She said if she got scared, she still had to keep going.”
“What was she scared of?”
Emily picked at the hospital blanket.
“That Jason would put her in the loud room.”
The words landed with frightening precision.
Not the shed.
The loud room.
Something inside it.

When Bennett heard that, she requested a second search team immediately.
And by evening, a structural engineer was on-site cutting through the pump house floor.
