Chapter 5 - The Offer on the Café Had Come Three Months Earlier

The Desert Star sat on eleven acres beside the highway.

Clare had never thought of that as valuable.

Mostly dust.

Parking.

A rusted storage shed.

Mary’s small memorial garden behind the kitchen.

Then William showed her the offer.

Red Mesa Travel Holdings.

$2.8 million.

Cash.

The company was assembling parcels for a new truck stop and distribution complex.

The Desert Star sat beside the only practical access route from the highway.

William had refused.

Twice.

“Why?”

Clare asked.

William shrugged.

“Don't want to sell.”

“Three million dollars?”

“Money isn't automatically a reason.”

That sounded like William.

But Clare noticed his thumb resting on Mary’s name at the bottom of an old property deed.

The café had been hers first.

She bought it when William was in prison.

Clare looked up.

“Prison?”

William did not flinch.

“Fourteen months.”

“For what?”

“Assault.”

The word settled between them.

“Biker stuff?”

“Yes.”

He folded the offer.

“Ryan works security contracts for Red Mesa.”

There it was.

“Then this is about the land.”

“Maybe.”

“You don't believe that.”

“No.”

Clare became frustrated.

“William, somebody grabbed me by the hair in front of forty people because of something you apparently know and won't explain.”

He looked ashamed.

That affected her more than anger would have.

“You're right.”

“Then explain.”

William opened his mouth.

The office phone rang.

County licensing.

A complaint had been filed alleging repeated violent incidents connected to the café.

Not enough to close them.

Not even close.

But enough to start questions.

Insurance called later.

Then their lender.

Ryan’s edited video was spreading exactly where pressure mattered.

Clare thought she understood now.

Make the café look dangerous.

Make William sell.

Then William said:

“Red Mesa doesn't need all this.”

“What?”

“They could keep making offers.”

“So?”

“So somebody wants me angry.”

May you like

He looked toward the motorcycles outside.

“Land is only part of it.”
