Chapter 4 - William Would Not Let Them Touch Him

Seventy bikers surrounded the Desert Star.
Not one entered until William opened the door.
A giant man called Earl took one look at Clare’s bleeding scalp and Ryan sitting against the booth.
“What happened?”
William answered:
“Nobody touches him.”
Earl stared.
“He put hands on Clare?”
“Yes.”
“And we're doing nothing?”
“We're calling the sheriff.”
Ryan laughed softly from the booth.
William turned.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Clare heard it.
So did Earl.
The older riders looked confused.
Twenty-five years earlier, Clare suspected, Ryan would not have left that café walking.
That was probably what he expected.
Instead William ordered coffee.
Told people to move the motorcycles away from the highway entrance.
Asked someone to photograph the broken dishes.
Then waited.
The sheriff's deputies arrived nine minutes later.
Ryan insisted William attacked him without cause.
Six witnesses contradicted him.
So did phone video from a tourist.
The footage showed Ryan grab Clare first.
That should have made things simple.
It didn't.
That evening, a local Facebook page posted a different clip.
William punching Ryan.
Dozens of motorcycles arriving.
Men in leather surrounding the café.

The first three seconds—the part showing Ryan assaulting Clare—were missing.
Clare stared at the video.
“Where did they get this angle?”
William knew.
The dark pickup.
By Monday morning, the edited footage had reached a regional news station.
And somebody had filed a complaint with county officials alleging organized intimidation at the Desert Star.
William watched the report in silence.
Clare expected anger.
Instead he whispered:
“Damn it.”
That frightened her.
May you like
Not because Ryan had succeeded in lying.
Because William seemed to understand exactly what Ryan wanted the lie to accomplish.
