Chapter 14 - The Riders Came Back Without Being Summoned

The following September, Mary’s memorial ride returned.

Sixty-three motorcycles.

Fewer than the year before.

One rider had died.

Another had knee surgery.

Several were simply getting old.

Clare smiled at that.

Legends age like everyone else.

The café filled.

No television cameras.

No dark pickup.

No Ryan.

Earl walked in first.

“Coffee.”

“You could say hello.”

“Coffee is hello.”

Clare rolled her eyes.

William sat outside beneath the shade structure.

A young rider approached him.

Twenty-two, maybe.

New vest.

Too much confidence.

The boy asked:

“Is it true you used to be pretty dangerous?”

William looked at him.

“Yes.”

The kid grinned.

“Badass.”

William's expression changed.

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

William pointed toward the café.

“Dangerous people are mostly expensive for everybody around them.”

The kid laughed uncertainly.

William didn't.

Clare heard the whole thing through the open window.

That line stayed with her longer than any story about prison or fights.

At sixty, William finally understood that violence was not impressive simply because it made other people afraid.

Maybe that was redemption.

Or maybe redemption was merely continuing to understand the harm long after everyone stopped applauding the apology.
